How To Style Your Front Door For The Fall

Can you believe it’s that time of year again? It’s the time when we start to transition our homes from our fun summer decor to items in the gorgeous, rich tones of fall, and what better place to start than the first area we see when approaching our homes… the front door!

The fall season is full of delicious foods, in our opinion the best fashion, and a certain electricity with students and teachers heading back to school. September marks the end of summer and the beginning of a new era for many. The energy in the air at this time of year springboards us into being extra creative and brings out the decorator in all of us. So why not take advantage of this energy and transform your front door into the talk of the town?

Follow our guide on How To Style Your Front Door For Fall for best results.

You want to lay the right foundation

and start from the ground up. This is generally a good rule of thumb for most decorating projects. Rugs are a super easy item to switch out with the seasons and they can make a huge impact on the overall aesthetic of your front door area. Layering a larger rug below a doormat is your best bet for achieving a cozier, more welcoming entrance, making sure the two are different colours and/or patterns to have your layering make the most impact.

Next, you’ll want to add florals and greenery.

This is an integral part to a front door area coming to life! Don’t be afraid of colour (despite what’s trending) and pick one or two colours that make your heart happy in the spirit of fall. Have fun with this, as it’s meant to bring you joy and be inviting.

Tip: One of our favourites for any fall front door transformation has become a classic in fall decor and a fool-proof way to introduce florals. Add some colour and be forever en vogue for fall with mums!

Don’t forget to create height!

Adding decor pieces at varying heights creates interest and helps the viewer’s eyes to move around the space instead of staying fixed at one level. An easy way to do this is to add planters, which tend to bring interest two-fold. Not only will you be adding height, but you’ll be incorporating different shapes and types of lines. This is done by choosing geometric planters for a more modern and angular look, or rounded planters which add beautiful curves to an otherwise rectilinear area. Whichever route you choose, you’ll be well on your way to having an interesting and inspiring fall front door.

What would a front door be without the quintessential wreath?

Wreaths add a touch of whimsy that can’t be replaced by any other decor item. They create a focal point and help again, to move the eyes around the space. Instead of viewers staying fixated on the lower level, we now have a point of interest that draws their attention upward. Wreaths are a very pretty addition to front-door landscapes.

Finally, but not least important, is the lighting.

Your sconces (or overhead lighting, for some) should elevate the entire front door area of the home, and be versatile enough to transition throughout the year, seeing as most people won’t want to change the lighting out seasonally like the rest of the decor. Lighting is often the forgotten piece of the decorating puzzle, even though it’s essential to us being able to navigate during times of low natural light. Don’t drop the proverbial ball on your home’s lighting situation and make a habit of choosing complementary, timeless pieces throughout.

One takeaway we feel is important to highlight

is to not shy away from decorating for fall just because you don’t want your home to scream “pumpkin patch!” If pumpkins or any other Halloween-related item isn’t your vibe, don’t include them! Your home should be uniquely your own, and decorating it should feel fun and exciting.

Some ways to up the enjoyment of transitioning your home season to season are to make your favourite drink to sip on while doing so, listen to music that makes you feel happy or cozy, or ask someone to help you decorate who you’d love to spend some quality time with. Your home will feel ready for fall in no time and that front door will have neighbours and guests wanting to copy your effortless style!
